SHANNON KOHL

Canadian-born songwriter and performer, Shannon Kohl, is known for combining tropical sounds with her soothing, breathy vocals. She is proud to write original lyrics, which are influenced by her direct experiences.  Shannon’s intention is to use the beautiful art of music to express her true feelings about various aspects of life.  

Like most of the world’s population, music has always been a major part of Shannon’s existence.  It has helped her navigate through many different chapters in her life, serving as a beneficial distraction, a mood booster, and a way to feel connected to others.  Whether listening or creating, our connection to music is timeless.  

During school-age years, Shannon would often scribble her feelings and ideas down in her class binders.  On occasion, she also wrote original song lyrics in her planner when the mood struck.  In her free time, she loved to watch music videos and learn the choreography.  She looked forward to the weekends when she and her friends and her sister, Chelsea, would have fun rehearsing group dance routines.  Shannon was enrolled in extracurricular dance classes since the age of four.  Over the years, she participated in various styles of dance including Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Belly Dance and Pole. 

One of Shannon's favourite birthday gifts was her karaoke machine!  She would spend much of her time practicing pitch, melody, and tone.  It even had a cassette recording feature with which she experimented.  In her later teens, Shannon and her sister received the video game Rock Band as a gift, and the two would play together almost daily.  Shannon played the guitar and vocals, and Chelsea rocked the drums! 

Having graduated from an Arts High School, Shannon was surrounded by artistic souls everyday.  Even though she attended the school’s general program, it’s undeniable that her time spent there had a major influence on her appreciation for the arts today. 

At age 25, one of Shannon’s best friends, Kristina, suddenly passed away.  She was a talented vocal student at the same Arts High School.  Shortly after Kristina’s passing, Shannon felt a strong urge to begin exploring her vocal ability and express her emotions through songwriting.  

In 2019, Shannon was introduced to a very talented musician and teacher in Toronto by the name of Jag Shival (Cosmic Cheetah Music.) They’ve worked for numerous hours together on vocal training. Jag was instrumental in helping Shannon strengthen her voice and develop new sounds she had yet to explore. 

Shannon is currently living on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, where the love of music is heavily ingrained in the local culture.  She is one of the vocalists in the band "Ojala", performing well-known songs live in evening venues around town.  She loves connecting and collaborating with fellow musicians in the area. 

Every morning, Shannon wakes up feeling so fortunate to be able to share her sincere thoughts and feelings with listeners around the world. She is grateful and excited to see what the future holds for her career and for this Earth!
